Tainan Metropolitan Park is located in Rende Township, Tainan County, northwest of Tainan City. It is joined in the west by Tainan Airport. The park is surrounded by century-old monuments such as the Rende Sugar Refinery, Baoan Station, and Baoan Temple, which was built in 1718. In the future, when the museum on the southeast side is complete, the park will become a culture & arts museum area.

The park is adjacent to San Ye Gong River. Due to its low-lying terrain, water retention is relatively easy. Therefore the five-hectare landscape pond not only serves as a scenic spot but also provides flood retention.

The ecologically engineered waterfront features diverse aquatic flora and botany that attracts birds and butterflies. The landscape flood retention pool has now become a habitat for resident birds, migratory birds, insects, and plants to rest and forage.

The Tainan metropolitan area is currently the fourth largest in Taiwan. The aggressive promotion of major transportation infrastructure will generate flourishing new development for the Tainan metropolitan area. However, in order to enhance the quality of life, future needs for a recreational space should be considered as well. As a result, establishing a large, comprehensive park near the city center has become important. Meanwhile, regional multicore, dispersed developments can also be fostered in the Tainan area through this development opportunity, thereby reducing the urban-rural gap.

In 1997, the Executive Yuan ratified the “Tainan Metropolitan Park Development Project”. Besides purposes such as leisure, socialization, or environmental education for the local residents, the park’s creation can also regulate the ecological functions of the urban area, increase environmental landscapes, and improve the quality of the local environment. As the first metropolitan park devised and developed by the local municipality, the Tainan County Government hopes to introduce new creative ideas through international competition. By doing so, the Tainan Metropolitan Park will be a gateway to the world to the international city of Tainan and become its most iconic public facility.
